Inside the Peacock Garden: A Maximalist Dining Room Case Study

Inspired by the regal beauty of the peacock, every layer of the Peacock Garden was designed to pull you closer — from the color and pattern to the furnishings, textiles, and unexpected details. This is what happens when heritage meets fearless creativity.

The installation debuted at the To Live + Design Experience, a curated showcase at ADAC Atlanta that invites designers to push beyond the expected and tell their stories through full-room installations. For Charlee & Knox Atelier, the story began with a single piece: a hand-painted sideboard alive with peacock feathers in deep emerald, gold, and indigo. From that one object, an entire dining room grew — a room that could hold a Sunday lunch and a forty-person dinner with equal grace.

The Peacock Motif

The sideboard became the room’s anchor. Its peacock motif — rendered in jewel tones against a dark ground — set the palette for everything that followed. We echoed the motif in a custom ceiling mural above the dining table, where amaranthus and peacock feathers intertwine in a pattern that feels both old-world and utterly fresh.

The mural is the room’s secret: you do not see it until you sit down, and then it becomes the whole sky. A peacock perched in midnight branches, a crescent moon glowing through the canopy — painted entirely by hand, it turns the ceiling into a fifth wall worth looking up for.

The Cabinet

A matching bar and display cabinet was commissioned to sit across the room. It carries the same peacock motif on its doors, but the interior is lined in a warm gold leaf that turns the glassware into a jewel box. This is where the room’s maximalist instinct lives — not in clutter, but in the courage to let a single motif repeat and deepen until it becomes a world.

The Table

The dining table is a custom piece in walnut with a hand-rubbed finish. We styled it with tall taper candles in brass holders, a runner of hand-loomed linen, and a centerpiece of cut amaranthus and anthurium that reads like a still life from another century. The chairs are a mix — some recovered in deep emerald velvet, others in warm caramel leather. A dining room should not feel like a boardroom.

The rich, expressive palette woven throughout the design was inspired in part by the Sherwin-Williams ColorMix® Forecast from SW Design Pros, which provided a beautiful foundation for storytelling through color. Deep navy walls, jewel-tone velvets, and gold-leaf accents all trace back to that forecast — a reminder that great rooms often begin with a single, well-chosen color story.

The Room, In Full

Every surface that is not the peacock motif is quiet, so that the motif can sing. The walls are a single deep color. The floor is warm, natural wood. The lighting is layered — a statement chandelier for drama, sconces for warmth, and candles for the table itself. This is the discipline of maximalism: it is not about adding more. It is about choosing what matters and letting it breathe.

The Experience

The Peacock Garden was created for the To Live + Design Experience at ADAC Atlanta, with gratitude to ADAC and ML Interiors Southeast for creating a platform where designers can push beyond the expected and tell their stories. The installation also drew on the Sherwin-Williams ColorMix® Forecast from SW Design Pros as a foundation for the rich, expressive palette woven throughout the design.

We didn’t come to blend in. We came to leave a fingerprint. The room holds a story, and the story is this — a single beautiful object, followed with conviction, can lead you somewhere worth going.
